I am trying to determine how many people on this forum bought the ACR as their first semi auto Assault Rifle.

ACR. Wanted something different. Something that didn't have a charging handle in the back.

Bought a Colt 6601 back in the late 90's back when the words "pre ban" upped the price on something by a factor of 10. Turned her into an M4-gery for many years, now it's just a lower. Have been thinking of getting one of their monolithic uppers to keep it pure Colt though.

Pre-ban Bushy back in 96' at the Market Hall gun show in Dallas. I sold the upper on GB, then accidently broke a buddy's DPMS receiver punching the roll pin out of the trigger guard. I gave him my BM receiver as compensation. Now my dad has the DPMS lower on the M4gery I built him and it works just fine.

Well, you know now that I think about it, the first centerfire rifle I bought was an M1 Carbine. Inland Mfg, Sep '43 dated barrel, Blue Sky import from Israel for $150 at the local fun store when I was 16. Of course my pops signed for it but I was in awe of the piece of history it represented since growing up there were WWII vets all over back home. So while I would consider that Colt my first so-called "assault" rifle that little M1 Carbine did play a big part in assaulting Fortress Europe in its day. Pops still has it at the homestead for assaulting the groundhogs out in the veggie garden. I guess it rests with what the official definition would be. :)

Yes, the M1 Carbine would qualify, in my opinion. It is light weight, semi and full auto in the M2 configuration and quick to handle. It was a fore runner of a sub powered cartridge (compared to a battle rifle) concept. I have a Rockola and a Winchester, but sadly, I've fired neither.

First semi auto is a Ruger 10/22 that I have had since I was about 12. It now looks nothing like it did when I got it, but after over 10,000 rounds she still gets the job done plinking.
Since then I have owned and sold many, only kept a few of these:

GSG 5SD
Del-ton AR15
Plumbcrazy AR15
Bushmaster AR15
FN AR .308
MSAR STG 556

and lastly my baby, Black Beauty(my ACR)...I will post pics of her in a few weeks, once I get her set up the way I want her.

I can understand wanting to keep things in good condition, otherwise that piece of history won't be around. I gotta say though that I'm "that" guy and shoot everything I buy. But then again I go after a shooter grade rifle and leave the nice pieces for the folks that really appreciate such details.

That M1 Carbine is a neat shooter. No recoil at all really. Paper plate accurate to about 100yds. The round may not have a lot of stomp to it but I still wouldn't want to get hit with at any range. I wonder what would have happened if they had bottlenecked that case to something like 6mm back then?
