As a kid, I remember Marines not being too fond of the idea of a Marine "Special Forces" unit, but 9-11 seems to have bolstered for need for asymmetric warriors across all branches, including Marines.

MARSOC Could Grow to SEAL Strength

Kit Up! just returned from a breakfast interview with the commander of all Marine forces on the East Coast, Lt. Gen. Dennis Hejlik with some DC-based defense reporters and one of the (many) interesting things he said was that he saw the role and size of the Corps’ special operations cadre growing by about 500 percent over the next few years.

Currently the number of MarSoc Marines stands at about 1,000 — drawing mostly from the Force Recon community but also from some high-speed infantry guys and other intel-centric MOSs. Hejlik said he sees the force growing to about 5,000, or about as many SEALs in the Navy.

I've never served. I got my LE job before I signed on the line. It was one or the other. That being said, I work with guys who served in each branch respectively. Of them, I'd say that the former marines (a term I learned quickly) have the biggest egos. That's not a bad thing. It helps. It's a confidence thing, and it really helps in the field. I also love their merchandising (I love that mascot).
Now, imagine that many marines that can say that their even "more special" than the others. Don't get me wrong, I think that it's a good thing, but I can't imagine having an argument with one.

Haha. Maybe my history is off. I thought that the whole point of founding the Corps was to have the "special" ability and training to fight at sea and on land. Aren't they, by their very purpose, special? Then, you add a special designation like this and they become a special marine. I'm sure that when it comes down to it, a marine is a marine and any one would do anything for another, regardless of MOS.
I better get rid of this shovel and get out some waders.

remember how the corps earned the title devil dog from the germans in wwI? that was at the battle of bella wood. 2/6 is the unit that did that. my battalion. we earned the corps some new titles from the taliban when we were in marjah, afghanistan last year: cowboys from hell, devil's cowboys, and my favorite...the devil's horsemen
