Alot of units went to patrol cap in garrison and you only had to wear the beret off post and in class A uniform. Im glad though. That thing sucked. Most people couldn't wear it right. It took away from what was a prestigious thing for airborne and rangers. I think it was kind of a recruitment tool.

Thank Eric Shinseki for feeling his troopers needed to feel better about themselves by wearing a completely useless piece of headgear.
IIRC, his background was armor and there was a push from back his day for the tankers to wear the black beanie. I remember some real old timers talking about it while I was deployed with SFOR.

I never wore the beret. It was PC for everything unless the commander very specifically said to wear the beret.

Most people wore the PC. The beret was actually rare-ish. Probably because everyone thinks it's gay.

^^ thats because you actually earned the maroon beret (considering you are airborne and not attached to a special forces unit as support)

wore the maroon beret for 7 years... it's value decreased when I realized a bunch of legs were running around wearing it. I prefer the PC these days.
