Excellent question. Either they treated with something or are very hard. 3400 rounds thru mine and the reciever rails have zero wear on them. In fact most of the moving parts have minimal wear concidering.

If I remember correctly from an interview with Bushmaster reps, all moving parts of the ACR are melonite treated. I believe that included the rail in the reciever, bolt, carrier, cam pin, barrel, barrel extension, and gas system. However, I know the clamps that guide the piston aren't melonited, or at least one part is not melonite treated because it rusted!
