I have had a 6mm x 45 mm CAR heavy barrel laying around my bone pile of parts for some time now, assuming gas system parts become available in the future, I am thinking of using this as an additional caliber on my ACR ,its a standard 223 case necked up to 6mm(.243) so you need only a new barrel standard mags and bolt will work and Wilson combat is now supporting the caliber w/ new barrels and custom loaded ammo, and I was recently amazed at the number of loaded ammunition offerings on Midway USAs website ! was wondering if any other forum members were thinking the same thing?

6x45 is really intriguing. Allegedly it's on the horizon for the XCR too. Same bolt, same mags. Allows the shooter to "up gun" on the cheap with the ability to sling 80gr+ pills from the magazine. Side note, the 6x45 held many benchrest records back in the 60's so the accuracy potential is there.

I bought some dies and sized a few boxes of brass to be ready for it w/ the XCR but it doesn't seem like it will happen. If they offer it I'd pick it up in a heartbeat for the ACR. The 6mm/.243 caliber brings a lot to the party in terms of bullet ability and selection. It seems it's second only to .224 for offerings. I'm still itching to build my 6mm SPC

I reckon it wouldn't be too hard to custom build since it's more prevalent in the AR15 gunsmith's arsenal of tricks. I think it would be a worthwhile build.

Ya know, I was so blissfully in the dark about all these "wildcat cartridges" until this internet thingy came along. :) Some of them are so simple that it makes me want to break out my reloading stuff.

I priced some AR uppers and they are reasonable, just wish the flow of barrels for the ACR was better. After shooting all these newer piston guns, (ACR. SCAR, XCR) my poor AR's have been getting pushed to the back of the safe :)

BTW, do you know of any smiths that will re chamber / bore a barrel? I have a heavy 5.56 XCR barrel that I might play with.

Pete (shortfal) over on the xcrforum has done a couple custom XCR barrels, and, I know he does AR barrel work too. Real nice guy, might give him a try. Oh yeah, one of his custom XCR barrels was a 6x45. ;)

.224? please elaborate on this cartridge...i have never heard of it
Take a 5.56 case and expand the neck to 6mm (.243). 5.56x45 to 6x45, you might see it as 6mm/223 as well. That's it really, takes one step at the reloading bench (CorBon is making rounds and I think Black Hills is or was supposed to be). Because of case capacity you're really limited to bullets less than 85gr but you'll be punching a slightly bigger hole with a heavier bullet traveling at around the same velocities as the heavy 223 slugs. If I recall my history correctly it was on the short list for chambering in the AR15 also.

On the 6mm front, I'm keen to build a 6mm SPC, or, basically a 6.8 SPC necked down to 6mm. I'm betting the lighter slugs of the 6mm would increase the velocities from the short case. Shooting a Sierra 90gr FMJ would punch steel like the fist of the north star. There are some folks who have tinkered in this area. A builder on the 68forums has built a custom 6x41 based on the 6.8 case.

Thanks for the heads up, when I get serious I'll PM him over there.
