Okay so I purchased the 6.8 version of the ACR instead of the 5.56 version. My question is can you use the 6.8 bolt to shoot 5.56? If not why? Because I have purchased the 6.8 version I have to go through bushmaster themselves for the 5.56 bolt I haven’t found a barrel/bolt combo for the 5.56. Any info would be appreciated.
The 6.8 SPC shell casings are wider than a 5.56 shell casing, so the bolt face is larger to accommodate it. Also, the extractors are typically different as well. You will need to buy both a 5.56 barrel AND a 5.56 bolt to switch your ACR to 5.56. I'd recommend checking with BigDog here on the forum as he can typically get us good pricing on Bushmaster parts.
You gotta love it: Shoot 6.8 and enjoy all the benefits of that, but always have the option to easily drop back to 5.56/.223 in a pinch for easier/cheaper access to ammo.
It took BM finally dropping the 6.8 kit for my ACR to find its way back out of the safe after years of storage. It's crazy that it took this long for them to finally bring this to realization.
6.8 SPC is based off the .30 Remington cartridge and has a rim diameter of 0.422." 5.56 has a rim diameter of 0.378."Rim thickness is slightly different at .049" and 0.045" respectively so they may also use different extractors.
Dana seems to have a good line on BM factory parts and can probably get your a 5.56 barrel/bolt combo for a good deal. If I were you I'd ask him for a pinned and welded 14.5"
I’d have to check my parts to be 100% certain, but I think I have a spare 5.56 bolt. If so, I could probably swap you bolts. Of course this would mean that Dana would be building me another barrel! Haha...
