why do i have to run on supressed gas setting to run 5.56

ive been kinda tinkering around finding ammo that i like to run in my rifle . it eats any 223 you throw at it and loving it . went out and got some xm855 5.56 ammo in bulk on stripper clips and fired some rounds . and jam wtf i thought tried again jam . so i thought it was dirty so went home cleaned it . went out a few days later and tried it again jam jam jam . well i turned the gas regulator to suppressed setting and ran like raped ape nothing wrong no jams not a problem in the world . i know 5.56 is a higher pressure round but why would that make it act so funny . but if anyone has any answers or comments to this feel free to let me know . much appreciated.

Do you have the old or new gas regulator?

Some Acrs don't like 5.56, what piston spring do you have too?

I got lucky, both of mine love 5.56

+1, it is not a wide spread problem, but it has been documented several times. If you are going to shoot alot of 5.56 thru your rifle, a trip back to Bushmaster may be in order.

On a side note, that why I like what bigdog did with his short barrel setup, adding a gas adjustment to the the gas block. This way you can fine tune the rifle to what you are shooting thru it.

There is an old vs new parts thread with pictures I believe but the new regulator is rounded and not three sided. And the spring is squared and not rounded. Easiest thing would be you find some pictures or just take a close up of your spring and regulator and post it here

That's the new regulator but its hard to tell on the spring. Looks to be a new one. An angle in between the two that you took would be useful. Like the spring at a 45 degree angle from the camera.

It looks like a new spring but i'm not sure. I can tell you that your spring being a funnel like that is the 2nd time I've seen it happen. Mine was the first, I don't know what causes it but it will end up smashing the spring into the piston. Its almost like its misaligned, but with 5k rounds through my Acr the piston spring being messed up like that didn't hurt anything yet. YMMV
