    Tricky topic on Gun Rights

I have a tricky question on my capabilities of purchasing a firearm. I have filled out a 4473 and was told I cannot be sold a firearm because i answered Yes to if i was ever emmited into a mental institution. But I was stable enough to voluntarily walk in. I have done research prior to my attempt and found that as long as I was not admitted through the courts I am legal to purchase a firearm. I was told to go to backpage to buy off a private owner that does not require a 4473. I was still reluctant because I am SMI. And asked a police officer if I could get in trouble for carrying and was told its a tricky situation and he does not have the answer. Can anybody give answers on whether or not I can purchase a firearm?

I think you would be best served by raising your particular circumstance directly with the authority having jurisdiction, in this case your local/regional branch of the BATF. A return letter from them kept on file would ensure you are covered should the question ever arise after you are in possession of a firearm. This would protect you and the seller. I would not try to make a private purchase until you confirm your eligibility.
