thanks man, it takes some special ones, i actually popped a heli-coil out when i screwed the magpul moe rail in, but its covered now so i dont care as much-and it wont move so i think its secure

my problem is: the freaking surefire wire is too large on both sides for me to thread through the rail like its supposed to be...

    Bigdog,

Asides from making a seat for the gas block and piston guide, what else needs to be done to the barrel assembly (barrel, gas block, piston, nut) to make an average 10.5" AR15 barrel work with the ACR?

I ask because, when I get back from the other side of the world, I plan on turning my ACR into an 10.5 SBR. Paperwork'll be started sometime in the next month or two.

Oh, yeah: I'm a noob, so don't feel bad about drawing it out with crayons and finger paint. I aspire to some day be savvy with all the smithing of guns, but today is nowhere near that day.

Oh, oh, yeah: Hello all! I'm new.

basically once you get the taper pins and the piston support fitted for the barrel you are pretty much almost done, the piston needs cut down for the carbine length, plus the gas port needs reduced somehow. supposedly bushmaster is making the barrels now so you might be able to buy a complete set from them when you get back

Been following this and HK94dudes thread over on arfcom and loving it. My ACR should be coming in next week and i have a Adams Arms melonite 5.45 barrel on it's way. The thought was to go between 10.5 and 11". From reading your posts the piston gets cut 2" then the end of the rod gets reprofiled to match what was just cut off. The bolt will be chucked up and opened up for the slightly bigger rim. Is there a set distance or spot that you do the m4 cut for the piston support?

I had a 16" 5.45 piston kit for my AR that ran perfect. When i cut it to 11.5" it was way under gassed and would push the bolt far enough back to reset the hammer but not strip a new round. Since i would be going even shorter with the ACR (while only an inch) im curious to see what will happen. Id rather under-gassed then over.

i cut the piston almost completely level with the barrel after everything is assembled, any longer than that it will hold the bolt open slightly.

as far as the op rod support, i had it installed the same distance from the gas block as it was on the midlength barrel. everything gets moved about 2" back

how much was that rail piece?

i hate my ACR because of its weight. every time i go shoot i choose the lighter 7.5" or the 10.3"

i wish the ACR was 3lbs lighter.
