Have any of you who've messed with 5.45 conversions tried JHP, SP or Hornady V-MAX ammo in your rifles?

SamM, Did you use Mike's 6.5 Bolt with a 5.56 extractor for this build? Looking at picking up the Spikes Lother Walther barrel for this build.

    Bossfoss,
No, my conversion used a standard Bushmaster 5.56x45 bolt. It was opened up just a little to fit the 5.45x39 bolt size. Any competent gunsmith should be able to do the conversion for you. Viper's gunsmith did my bolt work. My conversion did use the same barrel that you mentioned though. Mike's bolt will not work with the 5.45x39, as the 7.62x39 bolt head is much bigger on that caliber.

Are you using a standard 223 extractor?

Anyone have a source for AR 5.45 extractors other than Model 1 Sales?

Sounds good, I will get one coming from BM. I thought that the 6.5 would be a bit big, but i couldn't find a lot of info on the web about it and I don't have any 5.45 ammo yet to check against. Thanks SamM

It was a stock 5.56 extractor. The gunsmith did all the work. I just told them what I wanted to do.

Well, UPS delivered my 5.45x39 parts to Marvin Pitts yesterday. Hopefully I'll have a working conversion in a couple months.

    Will update...

My 5.45x39 conversion was traded away several months ago. I felt that it was too similar to the 5.56x45 in both power and accuracy. There was no real reason to have two cartridges that similar. The ammo isn't as inexpensive as it once was. I like the idea of being able to shoot Russian ammo in my rifle though, if the fit hits the shan.

I tend to agree but I've got a couple cases of 5.45x39 that probably won't get shot up otherwise.

I'm into my ACR at a good price so I figure I can afford to experiment with it a little. If this conversion works well I might see about getting a 6.8 barrel worked.
